As mining progresses westward, stripping activities become increasingly complex. Ore deposits lie deeper beneath the seabed, requiring the movement of larger volumes of sand, management of higher mining faces, increased water seepage into mining cuts and additional boulders to reinforce the seawall. These evolving conditions demand innovative solutions that improve both productivity and safety. This is where the Dry Mining Unit (DMU) comes in.

Material is pushed into the DMU by D11 dozers, Caterpillar’s largest and most powerful bulldozers. Fitted with semi-universal blades, they can move up to 27.2 cubic metres of material in a single push.

The Dry Mining Unit is an innovation embraced by the people who bring it to life. To reinforce employee ownership and celebrate the collaborative spirit behind the project, Namdeb invited employees across the business to name the innovation through a company-wide naming competition. Following enthusiastic participation and employee voting, the winning name became Hailwa, a name submitted by Iyaloo Moses, one of our Mine Overseers, the name symbolises victory and reflects on the determination, ingenuity and resilience that made the project a reality.

It strengthens Namdeb’s operations today while supporting sustainable mining for future generations.
